Effacement/mémorisation
Estefania Penafiel-Loaiza is the baby of this group. Originally from Ecuador, she has lived on this imaginary line that cuts humanity in two. One finds this theme in the series of Mirages, started in 2005 by a video of the horizon off shore of the Havana, and followed by the (invisible) drawing of a line made with an eraser on a wall. The triptyque came to a close in 2006 with a work about memory. In this last work, the artist worked with Armenians and listed words, dates, names that reminded them of their loss, of what they missed, and of their memory. These were written with fingers on a glass pane, leaving a trace as real and immaterial as an eraser line drawing or a horizon. In the installation From One Look to Another, the artist printed 25 different images each 1000 times of a young woman’s uneasy and fixed gaze. The images are taken from a fraction of a second of the film The Battle of Algeria. The 25th image, in which the actress looks directly into the camera, transforms us from spectator to witness of this conflict that has inspired so much writing. For the artist, it is easy to repress a memory, it is nothing more than a trace of something that existed. War, genocides, colonisation, revolutions…The ghostly works of Estefania Penafiel-Loaiza are just as well lights that help us (re)examine history. |
